Face to Face Interview: Closing The Interview

Having done the hard-work make sure that you end the interview on as positive note as possible.  Whilst first impressions certainly count the manner in which you end the interview will also leave a lasting impression in the interviewers mind.

As such:

  • Ask the interviewer if there any final questions.
  • Ask the interviewer if they have clear answers to all of their questions – don’t be afraid to go back over these.
  • Ask them for initial impressions and thoughts on next stages/timeframe.
  • Thank them for their time and interest in your profile.
  • Re-iterate your interest in the role & function – be specific.  Something along the lines of…’having learnt more about the opportunity I am particularly interested in X [relate it to something they deem important usually role & responsibilities and career progression]’.
  • Tie this in to your ability to add value…’project Y sounds really exciting as it would allow me to really add value using the skills I developed at A, however, also develop them to meet my career goals’.
  • Remain professional.  Even as you are being walked out of the building the interviewer will be making his mind up on you…no back slapping, pub jokes etc!
  • Be polite.  If they are booking you a taxi be courteous to reception or whoever is doing this.

Finally, contact your consultant immediately after the interview whilst it is still fresh in your mind.  Talk this through with him/her in an honest and transparent manner.  We want to know what you really think rather than what you think we want to hear.  It is this kind of relationships which will allow us to find you that perfect role!
